This project, started as a carport and pool house to replace the crumbling garage, became such an exciting two story loft that the Owner, a swimming instructor, decided to move in permanently and transform the existing house into office and guest quarters.
The slanted volume stretches along the swimming pool like an emerging whale or a glossy cruising ship. Horizontal zincalume panels cover the N and S elevations with the exception of a giant glazed roll up door that opens directly to the pool. Insulated policarbonate panels in two tones (clear and translucent) extend over the E and W elevations providing light with privacy.
Passive cooling in summer is provided by cross ventilation and sun light screening. Active heating in winter comes from the radiant concrete slab.
